Gosport Borough's Ollie Lunt was just one big hit away from recording a third century in his last four Southern Premier League innings.
The Queenslander from Brisbane's Northern District grade club faced Division 3 rivals Liphook & Ripsley having hit 141, 31 and 116 in recent matches.
This time he smacked 13 fours and two sixes in reaching 94 off 105 balls of Gosport’s Privett Park reply as they chased 218 for victory. There was still much work to do when Lunt was the fifth man out, caught with the score on 154.
Last-wicket pair Scott Taylor and captain Jack Richards were the batters who took Boro' home. Gosport still needed 27 when last man Richards walked to the middle to face the third ball of the 41st over. Neither is a mug with the bat and together they saw out 6.5 overs of tense action before victory was clinched.
Ryan Covey (60) top scored for Liphook, whose innings crumbled from 133-2 to 134-6 and then 143-7 thanks to the left-arm spin of Lunt and Taylor (3-42). Harry Munt (24) ensured some tail wagging, while Gosport also contributed 22 wides in a total of 33 extras.
Lunt ended with 4-32, his second four-wicket SPL haul in three games after his 4-37 against Portsmouth & Southsea and took home this website's round 9 'Cricketer of the Week' award, pictured left above.
Fair Oak hauled themselves off the SPL2 basement with a four-wicket victory over New Milton thanks largely to an improved showing with the bat sparked by skipper Harry Reed.
Early on it was all Fair Oak, as James Gradwell (3-17) and Ben Smith (2-14) ripped out four of the top five Milton batters with just 25 runs on the board. But Ollie Shrubsole, heroically withstanding the on-going pain from his severe knee injury, making a 13-four 81 and sharing a 92-run stand with Lee Beck (41) and another 50 with Ed Denham along the way.
Sree Yegnasubramanian (3-37) then dismissed the tail, concluding the New Milton innings at 185. Keeper Matt White was happy with his haul of four catches.
Like most of his colleagues, Reed (52) had been short of runs, but patiently took Oaks to 116-3 thanks to stands of 43 with his brother Sam (31) and James Todd (23).
Milton skipper Ed Bartlett took 3-29, but Yegnasubramanian (31 not out) and White (26) steered the Oaks towards the winning line by putting on 45 for the sixth wicket.
Those wins took Gosport Borough and Fai Oak away from the bottom two, positions occupied by St Cross Symondians II and Hartley Wintney as the programme swings into its 'back nine.'
