Max Curtis struck his second century of the season and South African paceman Marvin Williams snapped up a second five-wicket haul as defending ECB Southern Premier Division champions St Cross Symondians trimmed Havant by 44 runs at the Green Jackets Ground.
The result strengthened Symondians’ third placement in the table – effectively only 15 points behind the leaders ahead of the visit of Bashley (Rydal) to Winchester on Saturday.
It’s a key match for St Cross, who will be in the thick of the ‘business end’ action if they win it.
St Cross lost MCC YC’s hopeful Billy Mead for a duck before Tom Foyle smacked a six-four 30. But when Harry Came was stumped off Richard Hindley, they were 66-3.
Cue Curtis, signed from ECB West of England PL top dogs Clevedon just before the start of the season, and Guernsey’s Matt Stokes to share a 143-run partnership and set up the St Cross victory.
Curtis made his mark a fortnight ago with a century against Burridge, but bettered it with 106, which contained a six and 14 fours.
Stokes departed for 67 during a collapse - prompted by Richard Jerry (4-43) and teenage spinner Freddie Gadd (3-52) – which saw St Cross plunge from 204-3 to 233 all out. Seven wickets for 24 runs.
It was left to the elder Gadd, Harry to underpin Havant’s 189-run response. He made 75 before being seventh out at 183, one of three victims for Hampshire prospect Harry Came (3-33).
But it was Marvin Williams who caused Havant most grief, taking 5-58 and two catches. The ‘Ocean Express’, as he is affectionately know back in the Cape, could be a main player in the coming weeks, particularly when Bashley (Rydal) come calling on Saturday.
