What a difference a year has made to Fawley’s fortunes ! Twelve months ago, finger nails were being bitten to the core as only three points separated them from the relegation trap door to Hampshire County Division One cricket.
A year on and the Watersiders are celebrating promotion into Southern Premier Division 2 as runners-up to Bashley (Rydal) II. Fawley were one of only three sides to topple the champions in their title winning 17-match season.
Fawley had to win their final match against near neighbours Hythe & Dibden to ensure Hambledon didn’t nick second place during their strong finish to the season.
But once the hugely influential Sufian Munir [left](3-22) reduced Hythe to 7-4 and later 48-6 when Dan Taylor (50) and Will McKay (33) began a partial rebuild. Hythe reached 153-9 with Adam Freeman and Bailey Parratt sharing the other six wickets.
Craig Stow’s 4-33 return ensured Fawley wouldn’t have an easy ride. In fact, at 55-5 it was odds-on Hythe & Dibden – and Hambledon snatching that prize second place behind Bashley !
But Munir was still there – a situation that continued even with Fawley a healthier 104-7. But Premier 3’s leading run maker (he finished the season with 807 league runs) prevailed, finding a reliable partner in Adam Freeman, whose 17 not out helped get the Holbury side home. Munir, cool as ever, finished with 72 not out, including ten boundaries. It was a promotion clinching knock alright …
