Sarisbury Athletic are on the brink of promotion back to the top table of Southern Premier League cricket after another nerve-shredding victory.
A week after tailender Sam Hill had struck a last-over boundary to sneak a one-wicket win against Rowledge, Athletic beat OTs & Romsey by just one run.
Needing five off the final over, OTs could only manage three singles off Archie Pascoe’s opening three balls. They failed to score off the fourth and Jack Robson swooped to run out Hakim Peruzi off the fifth amid dramatic scenes at Allotment Road.
As a result, Sarisbury now require just a single point from their final game against Hook & Newnham Basics at the KGV to claim the sole Division 1 promotion place.
And they might not even need that if Ventnor, whose title challenge received a hammer blow with defeat to Hambledon, fail to pick up maximum points in their last game against Havant.
Asked to chase Sarisbury’s 255 all out, Romsey were 64-3 when Connor Clark (5-49) dismissed Charlie King and Harry Tulk in the space of three balls in the 14th over.
But Joe Vaughan led a fightback, the opener adding 93 for the fourth wicket with Aussie Will Blitz (35).
Vaughan brought up his century before he was sixth out, having scored 112 off 116 balls, with the score on 204.
Sarisbury no doubt thought they had the game wrapped up when OTs dipped to 229-9, but Peruzi (23) and Matt Bampton (5*) added 25 for the final wicket before Robson hit the stumps.
Tom Morton and Josh Hill (40) had earlier laid 109-run first wicket foundations after they had been inserted. Hill struck three sixes and three fours before he was first to go, Vaughan having him caught by King.
Vaughan also castled Morton, who had scored a 70-ball 80, but Nathan Feltham kept the run rate going with a typically belligerent 86 off 79 balls, with nine fours and three sixes. That included hammering 24 runs off one Vaughan over – 4,4,4,6,2,4.
