Hugh Calloway produced a remarkable all-round performance as Ventnor squeezed a two-wicket win at Hartley Wintney to finish third in Southern Premier League Division One.
Bowling his medium-pace seamers, he took 5-37as Hartley were dismissed for 138 – a total Ventnor scraped past, almost entirely due to Calloway’s 69 not out.
It was Ventnor’s sixth successive win since mid-July, a sequence which included a comprehensive victory over champions Bournemouth at Steephill.
Chris Russell (2-45) removed both HW openers before Calloway got into his five-wicket act to reduce the North Hampshire side to 47-7 and later 62-7 before Will Ross (38) and Jamie Teale (37) added 75 for the eighth wicket. But the last three wickets fell without addition.
To stand any chance of winning Hartley needed to take quick wickets and thanks to Dan Wrenn (2-35) and young Australian Ben Earney (2-61), Ventnor dropped to 22-3.
However, Calloway completed a great all round performance as he then hit an unbeaten 69 to steer the island side home inside 25 overs. But he nearly ran out of partners as Rhys Batcup (3-25) saw Ventnor finish with eight wickets down.
