Hampshire cricket followers will be saddened by news of the death, in America, of Tony Mitchener, aged 81 years, a regular voice on BBC Radio Solent’s cricket coverage in the 1980s and 1990s, especially alongside the late John Hughes and Mike Barnard. Those were some of his happiest cricketing times.
A retired Royal Navy commander, who lived in Catisfield, near Fareham, he treasured his involvement with Hampshire, whether it be with Solent, a decade as Hampshire Handbook editor, or carefully compiling newsletters for the Hampshire Cricket Society and the Exiles. He also chaired the benefit year committees for David Turner, Trevor Jesty and Gordon Greenidge.
He also covered soccer on local radio.
While health reasons limited his attendance as the years went by, he never lost his love for sport, or for Hampshire or AFC Bournemouth. Nearly every conversation would include asking how Hampshire and the “Cherries” were getting on, still marvelling at the latter’s astonishing rise to the Premier League.
Tony's funeral is on Wednesday, 16 July 2025 at 3.15pm, at Portchester Crematorium.
