Rowledge have signed South African youngster Ash Lee Harvey (left) as their overseas player for the upcoming Southern Premier Division 1 campaign which begins with a visit to promoted Liphook & Ripsley on Saturday, 12.30pm.
The batting/spin all-rounder from Johannesburg steps up for his debut at Ripsley Park, but is ineligible for Sunday’s Venous Village Cup second round tie against Surrey Downs League side East Horsley at Church Road on Sunday afternoon.
Harvey’s arrival is offset by the absence of Jonty Seeborn, Will Ryman and Zach le Roux, who are all away at university for the time being, and teenage all-rounder Ethan Martin, who is trialing with the Hampshire Pathways.
But manager Chris Yates, who will restrict his cricket to turning out for the Hampshire’s 60s in midweek, is confident Rowledge will do okay.
He says: “We have a talented group of young players who have stepped up to the standard of Division 1 over the last two seasons.
“These youngsters will be supplemented with the experience of Ben Wish, David Lloyd, Ricky Yates and Richard Forbes.
“Ethan Martin will be part of the Hampshire Academy squad and, whilst he will be a big loss opening the bowling for us, we’re confident he will make a big impact in the county age group set up and so any appearance from him will be a bonus to the campaign.
“He got 69 against Havant for the Under-18s a few weeks back and enjoyed a 4-wicket return with the ball, so has made a promising start.”
Schoolteacher Ben Wish will continue to skipper Rowledge from behind the stumps and appears to have plenty of plenty of bowling options, particularly in the spin department with the evergreen David Lloyd linking up with teenage die Oli Baker and Ryan Littlewood. Harvey also bowl spin.
Rowledge pride themselves in fielding with a young energetic side who win games by their sheer never give up attitude.
Yates continued: “It should be a season of ups and downs as always with teenage players, but I believe there are plenty of good times ahead in the years to come.
“After an absence of two years, it might take a few games to adjust again to the 50 over game but I’m confident the team will learn quickly and the youngsters will step up.”
“A top half finish would be a successful season.”
