Conor Regan has been warned to keep his temper in check to play a key role in Gosport Borough’s return to the Southern Electric Premier League.
The fiery Borough bowler missed last weekend’s win over St Cross Symondians II as a disciplinary measure after kicking down stumps in frustration against Havant II on the opening day of the season.
Regan immediately apologised for his momentary rush of blood.
But the club acted fast to deal with the incident and handed out a one-match ban to their own player.
Skipper Tom Larner wants his player to retain the aggression that makes him a handful for opposition batsmen.
But he also knows that he must keep a lid on his temper as he brings him back into the side for the trip to South Wilts II in division three tomorrow.
Larner said: ‘It was just frustration.
‘He kicked stumps over after bowling a few bad balls.
‘He apologised straight away to both umpires and has actually calmed down a lot in the past few years.
‘But it was right that he was banned by the club and the league have accepted that as a final punishment.
‘We all make mistakes but you can’t really tolerate that.
‘Conor knew he had done wrong but he was sorry and was down at the club supporting last week, even though he wasn’t playing.
‘He will be itching to get back in and we will bring him back in because he is a key man for us.’
With South Wilts going great guns in the Premier Division, their second string have also registered two big wins in their first two fixtures in division three.
But Larner’s men earned a hard-fought 14-run victory in a close contest against St Cross II last week and are high on confidence.
Larner said: ‘We go to the team at the top of the league with a bit more belief.
‘It will be tough because they have got some really good players but we’ve got to believe in ourselves.
‘We’ve got our first win on the board and on our day, we can beat anyone in this league.
‘If we concentrate and play to the best of our ability, we can give them a real game.’
Lymington II’s Premier Division 3 visit to unbeaten Waterlooville features the sides that have won the Hampshire League, County Division 1 championship for the past two seasons.
Last summer’s winners Lymington give an SPL debut to Hampshire Under-15 captain Cameron Robertson and replaces Adie Hunt, who broke a collar bone in a cycling accident last weekend.
Bryn Darbyshire, who was given out handled the ball in last week’s defeat by South Wilts II, has decided to play in the less charged atmosphere of the Dauntsey’s School Old Boys match at Lavington.
Lymington II: Kelly, Edwards, Sutherland, Robinson, Jennings, K Moors, Cooke, C Moors, Chandler, Goodchild, Robertson.
Trojans look to make it three wins in a row at the expense of Alton II at Stoneham Lane, while one or other of Totton & Eling II and Basingstoke & North Hants will notch a first victory at Southern gardens. Havant are favourites at St Cross Symondians II.
