They've been playing cricket at Hambledon for well over 200 years, but it's unlikely there's been many centuries scored quicker there than the one Zimbabwean Bothwell Chapungu made for Hursley Park in Southern Electric Premier Division 2.
Playing only his second competitive match for Hursley (he bagged a second ball duck in the first), Chapungu smashed an unbeaten 111 off just 49 balls - with exactly 100 coming in boundaries !
"It's probably one of the fastest ever scored at the birthplace of cricket,"Hursley's Director of Cricket, Ian Watson remarked.
Chapungu, pictured left, went on his boundary blitz after Hambledon had collapsed from 113-2 (Shane Nkomo 40) to 151 all out, with Derek Manning (4-22) and Oli Green (4-32) doing the
damage.
"I told Bothwell to go out a have a look at the bowling and become accustomed to the pitch. I said that if he was still there in the 40th over, we'd win the game," he chucked.
The 27-year old left-hander, who plays Logan Cup cricket for the Mid-West Rhinos in his native Zimbabwe, didn't mess about.
With Andy Marks (31 not out) little more than a watching brief, Chapungu effectively finished the game single handed by the first ball of the 18th over !
He slapped boundaries all around the ground - his two sixes and 22 fours equating to exactly 100 runs crossing the rope.
The outcome was a crucial nine-wicket win which has lifted Hursley Park off the foot of the table.
