Dan Goldstraw, the Southern Premier League’s all-time record wicket-taker, is celebrating his 500th victim in the competition.
It came when he bowled Australian teenager Fraser Hay – the first of the left-armer’s three scalps in a thumping 159-run Sarisbury Athletic win which emphatically ended Portsmouth’s 100 per cent start to the season.
The bulk of Goldstraw’s amazing wicket haul came in his Premier League days, initially with Lymington, then BAT Sports, later renamed Totton & Eling.
But if Sarisbury skipper Matt Journeaux can persuade him to play for some more matches this season, the club’s prospects of regaining their lost Premier Division status will soar.
Goldstraw, pictured, took 3-27 and Shayne Freemantle 3-17 as Portsmouth were routed for 111 on a tiring Allotment Road surface, where the city visitors plunged to 63-9 before making a late rally.
Earlier, former Hampshire 2nd XI all-rounder Baz Akram blasted an 18-four 93 as Sarisbury went on to pile up a formidable 270-5.
He put on 150 with Ryan Covey (81) before Peter Hammond (25) and Matt Journeaux (28) put Sarisbury out of sight.
There’s just one point in it between the top pair now, with Basingstoke & North Hants third after another lean batting performance saw them lurch to 114-7 before a half-century by Chris Jolley (54) bailed them out against Liphook & Ripsley at Mays Bounty.
Chasing 151, Liphook tumbled to 58-5 before Suman Ganguly (43) gave them hope which petered out as they were dismissed for 132.
Local pair OTs & Romsey slipped farther behind in the drop zone, with OTs & Romsey losing a low scoring affair by six runs to visitors Rowledge, who narrowly defended 144.
Rob Newman hit a valiant 66 not out as OTs fell short at 138-8.
Zimbabwean Martin Mbofana hit an unbeaten 52, but Totton & Eling’s disappointing 125-9 was never likely to test Andover, who romped to an eight-wicket win.
Martin Miller lavished rich praise on Jake Hurley after he had starred with bat and ball during Bournemouth’s 40-run victory over Hook & Newnham Basics.
Hurley (80) led the way as Lions posted a presentable 220-8 before he claimed three wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 180 at their King George V headquarters, writes Neilk Perrett.
All-rounder Hurley hit five fours and four sixes in his 78-ball stay and shared a second-wicket stand of 67 with opener Ben Bridgen (55) who had put on 59 for the first wicket with Luke Matthews (18) to give the Bournemouth innings a solid foundation.
Miller said: “Jake’s innings was probably the best I have seen him play for the first team. He’s got a lot of power and he hit some very big sixes.
“We have missed him in the early part of the season for the past couple of years while he has been at Leicester University. He has always been a talented cricketer and we are now starting to see some of the best.”
Miller, whose team triumphed despite losing the toss, added: “The guys at the top of the order did brilliantly and set us a platform.
“Ben Bridgen at the other end is in good form at the moment and Jake came in at three, put away the bad balls and really got us motoring, which was excellent.”
Wickets were shared around by the Bournemouth bowlers, while Hurley (3-31) claimed the scalp of Hook top-scorer Matt Love (51) who was stumped by Chris Park with the score on 162.
