James Park has landed the New Milton captaincy on a permanent basis – having thought he was only Ryan Beck’s locum in last week’s Southern Electric Premier League victory over Liphook & Ripsley.
But, with Beck quitting the hot seat this week, former Bournemouth batsman Park will be in charge full-time from now on.
Beck, who has a broken finger, resigned at the end of last season but, having considered his options over the winter, decided to carry on.
Now he’s had another change of thought and has handed over the reins to his deputy, Park.
“I want to get into the side on merit and not because I’m the captain,” said Beck, who will play for Milton’s second team until he recovers from his injury.
Park takes over the captaincy with New Milton in a healthy state, having won all three opening games.
Southern Gardens, where they play Totton & Eling, was a happy hunting ground last season, Milton having beaten the Eels there in a dramatic Southern Electric t20 Plate final.
Totton & Eling have James Taylor back after scoring two Second XI centuries already this month.
Totton & Eling: Dibden, Arnold, Moore, Fletcher, Taylor, Beresford, Hamid, Perrin, Scurr, Blake, Mellett.
New Milton: J Park, L Beck, Edwards, Elliott, Gargaro, Haggarty, House, Lawes, Loader, N Park, Watts.
Calmore Sports will be looking to cash in on weakened Hartley Wintney’s indifferent start to the campaign by scoring some much needed runs on arguably one of the better Division 1 batting tracks.
Mark Lavelle has seen his newly promoted side rolled over for scores of 61 by New Milton and 74 at Hook & Newnham Basics, either side of beating Bournemouth.
Lavelle called it an ‘eye opener’ playing against two of the best SPL1 bowling attacks, but needs his run shy batsmen to come to the party on the historic Cricket Green tomorrow.
School teacher Tamlyn Goodrich, recently arrived from Corsham, is included after scoring a century for Calmore seconds last week. All-rounder Scott Baldin is a significant absentee for HW, who also line up without wicketkeeper Richard Hill and Danny Plume.
Calmore Sports: Lavelle, Vann, Johns, Goodrich, Holloway, Perry, Pegler, Rose, West, Proudley, Wright.
Andover were tipped as probably Division 1 promotion challengers, but they too have suffered an indifferent start, with only Dave Taylor firing with the bat. The burly left-hander smashed an incredible 172 not out to give Andover a six-off-the-last-ball win at Liphook, but they’ve subsequently lost to Totton & Eling and Rowledge. High riding Hook & Newnham Basics come to London Road boasting a three-match winning start and top spot in the table.
Ali Hooper has been doing extra gym work in preparation for a 50-over session behind the stumps for the Lions. Regular gloveman Matt Knight has examination studies, so Hooper takes the gauntlets - for the first time in almost ten years. Ed Duckworth is called up after taking eight wickets in Andover IIs opening two Hampshire League matches.
Andover: A Hooper, Augustus, Arnold, Treagus, Taylor, Souter, Duckworth, M Hooper, Foy, Adams, Knight
Bournemouth broke their duck with a nerve racking one-wicket win over Hartley Wintney last weekend.
They face the long cross-county trek to Liphook & Ripsley, who have lost all three games, albeit the opening matches by one wicket when they should have won.
Pete Smith gets the call up for Bournemouth, for whom teenager left-arm spinner Robbie Pack cracked a career-best 165 in a Dorset Sunday League game at Bradford Abbas last week.
Bournemouth: Hayward, Miller, Kitson, Finnie, Kidner, Pack, Matthews, Smith, Woodward, Khattak, Palmer.
