Harry Came was agonisingly run out for 99, one short of a debut making maiden Premier League century, after leading a brave Hampshire Academy fight-back before Havant clinched a 76-run victory.
The Academy were in a pretty hopeless situation at 43-6 in response to Havant’s formidable 268-7 when Came began to galvanise the lower order.
Came, pictured, who broke the Bradfield College run scoring records this past summer term, struck eight points in a patient 137-ball stay at the crease.
He enjoyed handy partnerships with Dom Clutterbuck, Ryan Murray and latterly Academy manager Bobby Parks, the former Hampshire wicketkeeper, who had to step into the breach at the 11th hour. Parks hit 17 not out, getting off the mark with a classy straight drive for four.
Came was eventually run out by Ben Walker as he made a desperate and unsuccessful effort to bring up his century.
Fielding a very young and inexperienced side, the Academy came under the cosh as Walker (78) and Pete Hopson (43) shared a century stand which laid the platform for a sizeable score.
Havant dipped to 150-4 at one point, but Chris Stone (42) and Stu Ransley (42) pointed the total towards 268-7, after which Cameron Prentice picked up a 4-31 return
