Lymington are forced to adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy whether Hampshire wicketkeeper Lewis McManus can play in today’s ECB Southern Premier Division clash with table toppers Havant at the Sports Ground, 11.30.
McManus is named in the Lymington team, but having suffered the frustration of last night’s Biblical storm which washed out the Sussex game, expects to travel to Taunton for Sunday’s NatWest T20 Blast against Chris Gayle’s Somerset. In that case, it’s unlikely he’ll play for his club team.
McManus only plays as a batsman for Lymington as Ed Ellis, who has a Lord’s date with Oxford UCCE in the BUCS final against Loughborough next week, is the resident gloveman.
Darren Cowley is a key absentee for Lymington, as will captain all-rounder Ben Walker be for Havant, who will have Simon Loat behind the sticks instead of Jez Bulled. Hampshire II hopeful Richard Jerry will take the new ball.
Lymington: Rogers, McManus, Lock, Hand, Ellis, Grierson, Beetham, Metcalfe, Calcott, Blake, Robertson.
Havant: Gorvin, Hindley, Morgan, Jerry, Ransley, Hopson, Loat, Matthews, Vanderslik, Stone, Davies.
South Wilts skipper James Hayward has lauded the run scoring exploits of his tail-end batsmen, but wants his top four to start making more positive contributions – himself included !
The past two ECB Southern Premier Division matches have seen remarkable rescue acts by South Wilts’ lower-order.
Steve Booth and Steve Warner provided the ninth-wicket gallantry with a stand of 88 which almost swung the drawn match with Havant in South Wilts’ favour.
And at Burridge it was the two SW last men standing, Rob Franklin and Luke Evans, who turned the match on its head by taking the champions from 118-9 to 203 all out and a totally unexpected 110-run victory.
“It underlines the depth we have in our batting – Rob and Luke, for instance, are very capable batsmen who would be much higher up the order in most other sides,” Hayward said.
“But the top order need to start making some runs as well – Jack Mynott and Jake Winter are the only two to have made fifties so far.
“Joe Cranch has played several key middle-order knocks, but there are a lot of runs to be made by the top guys, me included !”
Havant face some tough action this weekend, with in-form Alton visiting Bemerton for a Time pennant match (11.30) and South Wilts going to Havant for their ECB Royal London Cup group final on Sunday, 1pm.
Teenager Jack Richards fills in for the unavailable Steve Booth against Alton, who have won their last three matches.
