Teenager Lewis Allen produced a six-wicket haul in only his third Southern Premier League Division 1 appearance for Old Tauntonians & Romsey – only to finish on the receiving end of a heavy 132-run defeat by visiting Hook & Newnham Basics.
The exploits of the Peter Symonds College left-armer, who took 30 Hampshire League wickets for Michelmersh & Timsbury last summer, gave the hosts a real shot of achieving their second victory of the season with figures of 6-46 .
The 18-year-old swing bowler, who relishes late movement, removed Hook opener Kieran Thomson (11) before taking the final five wickets of the Hook innings, including fellow teenager Harry Came (58), whose partnership with the hard hitting Jordan Hobday took the game away from OTs.
Jody Brown (2-34) removed Hobday, while Matt Bampton took 1-28 as Hook & Newnham Basics lost their last six wickets for 46 runs and were all out for 225.
Romsey’s batting line-up could not support opener Charlie King, who batted the entire innings, hitting a resilient 50, before succumbing to the off-spin bowling of Aniket Divecha (2-23).
Besides King’s half century, only two of the hosts’ batsmen - Harry Tulk (10) and Brown (14) – as Hampshire Seniors left-armer Kevin Poulter (4-20) and teen Rhodes Franklin (2-23) made light work of their task, bowling OTR out for 93 to win by 132 runs.
