Portsmouth skipper Richard Locke led from the front as the newly promoted city side eased to the Southern Premier League Division 1 summit with an unexpectedly comfortably 81-run win over previously unbeaten Liphook & Ripsley at Southsea.
His 69 was the basis for Portsmouth's 238-9. He was ably assisted by a rapid 41 from Moseley-returning city university student Inderpal Nandra and a late 43 from Vikram Dawson.
Only Dan Wrenn (3-37) and Suman Ganguly (3-34) had much success with the ball for Liphook whose fielding was unusually below par.
Liphook’s top order reply was brittle to say the least, with only Giles Cover (68) making any impression; indeed, the next highest scorer managed a disappointing 18.
Liphook crashed to 62-5 with Ish Ahmad (2-22) and Inderpal Nandra (3-9), with two scalps each for Jed Whitecross (2-39) and Australian Fraser Hay (2-39) as Liphook were dismissed for 157 all out with 15 overs unused.
Totton & Eling suffered a third successive defeat as three Basingstoke & North Hants batsmen hit half-centuries to set up a 114-run win at Southern Gardens.
Basingstoke were 39-2 (Mitch Stokes 25), but teenager Max Harsham (52), Dan Belcher (51) and Australian Ben Julin (50) set up a plentiful 269.
Harsham and Belcher added 90 for the third wicket, before the youngster’s maiden fifty, which included seven fours, was ended as he was caught by Daniel Collier off the bowling of teenage left-armer Ethan Taylor. The same combination struck again to dismiss Belcher to leave the visitors on 171-4.
But Julin went on to strike four sixes and four boundaries in a rapid 50 before Chris Jolley (21 from 13 balls), hit two to the boundary rope and one over it. With Matt Thankachan (21) adding more runs from the tail, Basingstoke were all out for 269.
In reply Totton were all out for 155, as the Bountymen used eight bowlers and all of them took wickets.
Martyn James (1-21) was the first to strike removing opener Jack Mellett (1) and then Graham Porter (2-26) dismissed Sam Metcalfe (12) and Zimbabwean Mark Mbofana (8) to leave the Eels on 28-3.
James Taylor (24) top scored for Totton’s top order, but was bowled by Stokes (2-20) and Tobias Beresford-Power was trapped leg before by the off-spinner.
Several more wickets fell before wicketkeeper Tom Rouse (40) launched into the Basingstoke attack, hitting two sixes and five fours before being removed by Julin (1-22).
Glynn Treagus scored his first Andover century – only to finish on the losing side as Sarisbury Athleticsnatched a two-wicket Southern Premier League Division 1 victory at London Road.
The former Lymington and Bashley (Rydal) opener hit a six and 11 fours in his 104, sharing a crucial 121-run stand with Matt Knight (50) as Andover recovered from 87-5 to make 208-8.
Ironically, the century partnership was broken by Itchen college student Josh Stewart-Hill (3-31), who went on to celebrate a rare hat-trick. Tom Kitcher took 3-35.
Ryan Covey cracked an unbeaten 92, sharing a key 70-run stand with Matt Journeaux (35) before Sarisbury overcame a Babu Veettil (3-31) inspired wobble to get in by two wickets with seven balls to spare.
Bournemouth were quite literally sent spinning to defeat at Rowledge, where the Surrey-Hampshire border club posted a respectable 194 and then took all ten of the visitors’ wickets with their three-pronged spin attack.
Ian Metcalfe (47), David Lloyd (39) and New Zealander Sushant Balajee (37), left, eased Rowledge into a strong position as youngsters Dom Clutterbuck (3-31) and Jem Warner (3-45) profited from a turning Church Road pitch.
But they were upstaged as Rowledge trio Balajee (4-27), Lloyd (3-17) and lanky left-armer George Keeley (3-19) combined to shoot out the Lions for just 93.
