Sparsholt new boy Dave Banks chalked up his 7,000th Southern Premier League run and completed a half-century of league fifties as his side ended Hambledon’s unbeaten Division 2 start with a six-wicket victory at the Norman Edwards Ground.
The former Totton & Eling and Sarisbury Athletic skipper followed up a spell of 3-21 with the ball to hit 54 not out and lead his side home.
Hambledon began well as George Marshall (28) and Will Bond (25) passed fifty in the eleventh over before the visitors’ captain was a victim of a run out mix-up with the score at 56.
Mike Haworth removed Marshall immediately after and Dave Banks (3-21) weighed in as the visitors plunged to 68-5. After a short period of resistance, wickets continued to fall with only James Marshall and Prad Bains of the rest creeping into double figures.
Hambledon were dismissed for 113 in the 38th over as frugal spin twins Nick Doubell and Jeremy Frith (3-10) conceded just 16 off 13 overs, and Dave Gough (2-20) finished off the innings.
Sparsholt lost Stuart Tognarelli in the first over, but Banks (54) and Richard Kenway (who hit three sixes in his 38) steadied the innings to ensure no further immediate damage was done.
But potentially precious bonus points were frittered away as Sparsholt lost four wickets before achieving their victory target.
Newly promoted Trojans take an unbeaten three-match start into Saturday’s intriguing Division 2 showdown with Sparsholt at Stoneham lane.
They comfortably accounted for winless Hartley Wintney, with openers Simon Williams (74) and Ed Boyd (64) sharing a 149-run start and laying the base for a powerful 279-5.
Syed Mahmood (47) and a crash-bang 42 not out by Nigel le Bas, which included four sixes, put Trojans out of sight. Hartley Wintney sank to 127 all out, Jamie Donaldson taking 3-33 and Mahmood snapping up four catches.
A top order collapse, which saw five wickets fall for 19 runs, led to South Wilts II suffering a comprehensive defeat by SPL2 high fliers Calmore Sports at Bemerton.
The writing didn’t seem to be on the wall when Tom Cowley (35) steered South Wilts to 57-1, but once Paul Proudley (2-27) and left-armer Steve Wright (3-30) created inroads, the innings collapsed.
South Wilts subsided to 75-6, leaving Tom Pearce (28) and Paul Draper to pick up the pieces.
Although Dom Webb trapped Mark Lavelle leg before, Calmore were soon on their way, with opener Tam Goodrich (60), Ben Johns (38) and young Australian Ben Moss, with 28 not out, completing the seven-wicket formalities.
Fawley are off the mark with a 21-run win over unpredictable Paultons, which owed much to Andy Parratt and Dave Streather’s off-spin.
Fawley were rocking at 7-3 at Holbury when Parratt’s 61 steadied nerves and piloted Fawley to 131 (Peter Lamb 3-23). Richard Taunton College student Ali Bryers (3-24) then ripped out Paultons top three to leave Rob O’Brien (41) to prop up a listing ship. Hampshire Over-50s all-rounder Dave Streather ripped through the tail with 5-12 to leave Paultons 110 all out.
