Hursley Park threw themselves the proverbial lifeline in the Southern Premier League Division 3 survival battle with a 41-run win at Ryde, which deepens the islanders’ own relegation fears.
Their success at Haring Shute owed much to second-wicket pair Boswell Chapungu (86) and Jeremy Wright (54), whose 143-run stand laid the foundation for Hursley’s 237-7.
Chris Wheeler’s lively 36 gave Hursley, now out of the immediate danger zone, maximum batting bonus points.
Ryde got themselves into a tidy position through Sam Rockley (41) and Cameron Mitchell (39), but the pair both fell to Nick Turner, whose 4-46 return swung the match in Hursley’s favour.
Stuart Robertson hit 26 late on, but his knock came too little too late to lift Ryde beyond 196.
Hursley’s island success has increased Lymington II’s worries at the foot of the table.
A five-wicket defeat by title chasing Basingstoke & North Hants II has left Oli Kelly’s side eight points behind Hursley Park.
Southampton University student Oli Calcott (59), Kelly (36) and Conor Moors (33) top scored in Lymington’s below par 177 at the Sports Ground.
Omitted from Basingstoke’s first team, Ben Julin hit an unbeaten 79 and the injured Chris Jolley 52 in the visitors’ victory romp.
Now fielding stronger sides, Havant II have pulled clear of the immediate danger zone.
Cam Prentice, who hit 83 and took 4-34, was the start of the show in the 36-run win at sliding Gosport Borough, where only New Zealander Mike Ruffell’s 81 threatened the visitors’ 209 (Oli Jones 57).
Newly promoted Fair Oak are starting to mount a serious promotion challenge. They beat Waterlooville by five wickets to move into third place behind leaders Langley Manor and Basingstoke & North Hants II.
James Featherstone and Rufus Bullough did the damage with three wickets each as the Ville were shot out for 86, Max Goddard (25) top scoring.
Sam Hillman’s 3-24 return kept Ville in the picture, but Asad Abbas hit an unbeaten 31 to end their hopes.
Steve Harris (54) steadied the ship with an unbeaten half-century after Langley Manor had slipped from 68-1 to 117-6 before posting 177 against St Cross Symondians II at Knellers Lane.
Dave Orchard took 3-23, but with no one scoring more than 25, the Symondians’ reply petered out at 177, Graham Noble taking 4-25.
