St Cross Symondians appear to have lost Channel Islands talent Matt Stokes – at least for the remainder of the ECB Southern Premier League season.
The 20-year old played in the Winchester club’s opening four Premier Division matches before returning to his native Guernsey to play in the ICC World League Division 5 competition in Jersey, and be named player of the tournament. He is pictured by Martin Gray playing for Guernsey.
The Southampton Solent University all-rounder has now renewed his links with former Hampshire captain and Guernsey cricket director Nic Pothas, now academy director at Leicestershire.
He made an inauspicious Leicestershire Premier League debut for Market Harborough against title holders Kibworth, being run out for nine after seeing his three overs of medium-pace hit for 35.
St Cross were without Stokes, Adam Rouse (broken finger), New Zealander George Worker (elbow) and Joe Weatherley (on Hampshire duty), but still posted a healthy 230 all out before heavy rain led to their visit to Alton being abandoned.
Tom Foyle (49) fired St Cross to 65-3, but the eventual total owed much to the fourth-wicket stand between Greg Hollins (73) and Dan Young (41).
Leading 2015 Premier Division wicket-taker Julian Ballinger (5-58) and Toby Salmon (3-57) wheeled away for Alton, taking eight of the ten St Cross wickets.
The match was abandoned before Alton began their reply.
St Cross Symondians had their second team match with Fair Oak washed out, as was the third side’s visit to Sarisbury Athletic.
