Tichborne Park and Bashley (Ryal) II, who fought tooth and nail for the Premier Division 3 title last season, lock horns again in the Alresford countryside.
The promoted pair experienced differing fortunes in the opening round of fixtures.
Teenager George Ayling, a local bricklayer, cracked a maiden 44-ball century in Tichborne’s eight wicket win over relegated Hambledon, while title winners Bashley lost narrowly to Hursley Park.
Bashley completed the double over Tichborne last season will have their batting strengthened by opener Neil Thurgood’s relegation from the first team.
Tichborne Park: W Allam, T Allam, Cheyney, Don, Ayling, Berry, Butler, Skinner, Reid, Copeman, Bristow.
Bashley (Rydal) II: Gates, Thurgood, Ridley, Friedman, Maher, R.Taylor, Neal, N.Taylor, Eede, Bettle, Read.
Paultons and Hambledon will know each other’s game inside out by the end of the weekend as they lock horns in both SPL2 and the Davidstow Village Cup.
Paultons produced an indifferent batting display in losing by 23 runs at Portsmouth last week – only Australian Chris Hall and tailender Jack Murrell made their mark – but the return of Eric Linge and Rob O’Brien should stiffen their line up against the Dons.
Paultons: Richman, Robinson, Wateridge, Hall, Ling, O'Brien, Feltham, Murrell, Lamb, Pike, Denney.
Ian Turner is determined to put the embarrassment of the opening weekend behind him.
The Hambledon skipper saw his troops demolished by seven wickets inside 19 overs in their opening-day defeat to Tichborne Park. And the former Hampshire bowler was among those taken apart by big-hitting George Ayling’s 103 from just 44 balls as Turner went for 53 runs from just five overs.
And the 46-year-old, who spent five years as a county cricketer, admitted there was little his years of experience could do to stem the flow last week.
Turner said: ‘It was embarrassing really. I can’t remember having bowling figures anything like that before. Wherever I put the ball, he just smashed it. It didn’t matter whether you tried to put a yorker in or bowl short. You can try to bowl faster or slower but sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it. ‘Out of the 44 balls he faced, he struck the majority of them so cleanly.’
The Dons’ batting failed to fire with 157 all out but Turner believes his men will respond.
He said: ‘Of course, it’s a bit of a concern. But we will write it off. It has happened and it’s history. The boys are still buzzing and we need to go out and respond in the right way this weekend. Will Mann and Rupert Hetherington are ruled out but Prad Bains makes his debut.
Portsmouth, who are expected to be among the fancied sides in SPL2, have former Peter Symonds College wicketkeeper Alex Hammond back for the visit to Sparsholt.
