Alton skipper Scott Myers is backing Burridge to remain in contention for the ECB Southern Premier League title – despite the Brewers’ beating them at the Jubilee Ground.
Burridge suffered their second consecutive defeat – and conceded top spot to Havant – after losing by 53 runs to Alton.
Myers said: “They are a good side, with probably the best seam attack in the Premier Division, which will win them a lot of games, besides which they have some quality batsman.
“I expect them to be right up there at the end of the season.”
Surprised to be asked to bat first, Alton prospered through openers Dan Hutton (39) and Abeed Janmomamed (25), but three wickets went down for one run – two of them to Sullivan White (2-23) – after they had reached 70 without loss.
Myers (51) and Michael Heffernan (50) rallied with a 108-run stand, but the Alton skipper admitted it was a hard graft.
“We really dug in hard as they bowled exceptionally well. But it underlined our inner-strength, as in the past we would have probably folded for around 120,” Myers said.
Oxford Blue Robbie Heywood (24) struck some lusty blows as Alton reached a competitive 218-7, with Dan Stancliffe taking 4-63 and wicketkeeper Will Steward four victims for the visitors.
Burridge, whose only previous defeat this season was inflicted by South Wilts when Rick Ankers was forced to field a weakened side, made a position response.
Opener Dan Hewitt (44) and Geoff Dods (24) took their reply to 114-3, but after Myers (3-29) had dismissed the pair, Burridge tended to lose direction.
“While Dods remained at the crease, the outcome was in the balance, but a combination of tight, straight bowling and good catching that won us the game,” Myers added.
Julian Ballinger, pictured above, celebrated his 44th birthday with a 5-50 return – his 20th nap hand in the SPL – as Burridge sank to 165 all out.
“We have shown glimpses of what we can do this year. Against Burridge was probably the most complete performance I have been involved in as captain of this team. We have great momentum at the moment,” said a delighted Myers.
