Bournemouth saw their unbeaten start to the Southern Electric Premier League season end with a crushing nine-wicket defeat by BAT Sports on a Chapel Gate damp top.
Coming on as first change, Mark Page (3-10) ripped out South African Mike Stonier, Julian Cassell and Tom Webley in quick succession. David Banks (4-18) cut through the middle order and Chris Thomason the tail to leave the wounded Lions 86 all out. Kenya’s Kennedy Otieno hit an unbeaten 53 to ease BAT home.
Bournemouth’s demise enabled Havant and Calmore Sports to close in at the top with respective victories over South Wilts and bottom of the pile Cove.
An unbroken century partnership involving Hampshire YCs captain Luke Sears (81*) and Dom Carson (58*) carried Havant to an emphatic nine-wicket win over South Wilts at Bemerton, where Russell Rowe (51) propped up the hosts’ 142-8.
Paul Draper was the toast of Calmore Sports, who inflicted a fourth successive defeat on Cove at Grasmere Road, where the emerging all-rounder celebrated his maiden SPL century and later took three wickets. He remembers the occasion as if it were yesterday !
He recalled: “We had a good start to the new season and had a developing young team. Lee Savident was our pro (so to speak) and added good all-round capabilities to our home grown team. James Hibberd was developing well and Martin Kellaway led the team brilliantly as captain and with bat and gloves.
“Cove had two very good young prospects in their batting line up, Jimmy Adams and Chris Benham, and off-spinner Joe Ashton took a lot of wickets in their previous league.
“We batted first and worked our way steadily to 203-5. I batted through the 50 overs for my maiden hundred with eight fours. Greg Lewis and James Lucy each got 21. We thought 203 was above par on the wicket.
“We had a young bowling attack but they performed well. Sav, and our young IOW recruit from Shanklin, James Lucy started well and we bowled to Kellas’s game plan by building pressure.
“We took control of the run rate and squeezed them hard taking wickets regularly, including Jimmy Adams for 26. We always had good spinners and Mark Boston took wickets to continue our control.
“Neil Randall (who graduated to Southampton University and is now CEO at Anytime Fitness in Surrey) hit a battling 34 before I came on to take 3-22 to finish things off and complete a great team win.
“We never had superstar players at Calmore but we were always competitive. We had six home grown juniors playing in this game and that showed our ability as a club to produce Premier League players.”
Elsewhere, South African David Pryke rescued Hungerford from 89-5 and set up an eventual three-wicket win over Andover at the War Memorial Ground, where the visitors had posted a modest 167-7 with Ian Langdown (42) and Roger Miller (42*) top scoring. Jim Ettidge (30) and Steve Wyatt (35) responded, but Hungerford were wobbling when Pryke came in and hit a match winning 39 not out.
Teenage Aussie prospect Luke Ronchi (later to go on to far greater things) cracked an undefeated 83 as Bashley (Rydal) recovered from a shaky 22-3 to overhaul a disappointing 106 (Mark Richards 38) by struggling Burridge.

St Cross Symondians do Division 3 table toppers and Winchester rivals Sparsholt a favour by ending Old Basing’s unbeaten start. Half-centuries by Peter Came and Sam Miller give Basing a 119-run start, one that is wasted as the side finishes 195-8 at tea. St Cross bat consistently before the talented Steve Postle applies the finishing touch with an unbeaten 34.
Sparsholt cash in with a comfortable win at Bashley (Rydal) II, who sink to 49-6 before Graham Pardey (62) and Chris Gates (38) come to the rescue. But 165-7 is no sweat as Winchester College coach Kevin Foyle (67) sweeps Sparsholt home.

Chris Yates ‘shared’ eight wickets as Rowledge (251-8) powered to a 73-run win over Easton & Martyr Worthy. Shared ? It wasn’t the same bowler, instead, the uncle and nephew Yates combo that sank EMW – teenage left-arm seamer Chris (4-40) took out Easton’s top order before spinner Chris (senior) got into the act with a 4-26 return. Only Ian Butcher (55) rebuffed the Yates duo. Earlier, Stu Woodhouse (55) and David Lloyd (48) got runs for Rowledge.
