The Hampshire Academy chased down a Burridge total of 262 to win by four wickets with five balls to spare and preserve the ECB Southern Premier Division’s only unbeaten record.
Third-wicket pair Tom Cheater (79) and Sam Ruffell (66) shared a lively century partnership, which Archie Fairfax-Ross, with 45 not out, later improved to sweep the Academy to a third successive win.
“This was a very young Academy side, but the lads were so calm and composed under pressure and to score at the rate they did was superb,” said Hampshire Pathways manager Charlie Freeston.
“Tom and Sam, who put on 125, went at a rate of a run a ball to keep us in the game and to make sure that the guys coming in after them weren’t under pressure to score at eight or nine an over. In fact, it rarely got above six.”
“They rotated the strike well too. Only 58 of that 125-run stand came in boundaries, so there was a lot of excellent running between the wickets.”
The Academy lost Jude Wright and Dubs Wood cheaply, but were firmly in the driving seat while the Totton & Eling raised Cheater and Lord Wandsworth College student Ruffell were together.
But there was a hiccup when Ruffell was caught (166-3) and Cheater needlessly ran himself out one run later !
It meant Fairfax-Ross and Ethan Martin (24) having to reboot the innings, but their 36-run flurry pushed the Academy past the physiological 200 mark.
Burridge threw down some unwanted sundries to lessen the load, though Fairfax-Ross didn’t hang about, hitting several boundaries in his 45 not out. Louis Pritchard (12 not out) provided timely support.
Joe Collings-Wells (68) and Azimunnoor Chowdhury (36) had earlier put on 111 for the first Burridge wicket after skipper Hilio De Abreu had elected to bat.
De Abreu followed up by top scoring with 70 at No 4, and Dan Stancliffe added 30 off 20 balls late on.
But Burridge’s last three wickets all fell with the score on 262 with Rowledge teenager Ethan Martin and Prichard both taking 3-50.
