Hampshire’s Academy side are eyeing up a late bid to wrestle the ECB Southern Premier League championship away from the prying hands of title holders South Wilts and 2019 winners St Cross Symondians.
The title race will be decided in the ‘white ball’ 50-over arena over the next five Saturdays with the Academy, in third place, 17 points behind South Wilts and just eight adrift of St Cross Symondians.
The Young Hawks face the top two in their next two games – St Cross on the Ageas Bowl Nursery ground on Saturday (12.30) and South Wilts at Bemerton a week later.
The Academy have everything to play for !
They warmed up with a crushing 195-run victory over Bashley (Rydal) – Charlie Mumford and Dom Kelly [left] each hitting hundreds in a double-century second-wicket partnership.
Mumford followed his Hampshire U18 century against Essex with 131 (one six and 17 fours), while Kelly’s 105 was a first in county colours, although indications are they’ll be a lot more to follow by the Millfield prospect.
Joe Huns, who recently joined Bashley from Hampshire League title contenders Parley, dismissed both centurions in a 3-50 return.
Will Tripcony (43) glued the Bashley top order together after a double breakthrough by speedy Eton College left-armer Finn Catherwood (2-22), but from 79-2 the innings simply fell to pieces.
Tom Cheater (4-17) and Ethan Baker (4-19) initiated the collapse, which saw four wickets fall for seven runs and Bashley collapse to 123 all out, Josh Digby (26*) keeping his end up.
