South Wilts took four Hampshire Academy wickets – three with the new ball – before rain brought an inevitable end to the only ECB British Gas Southern Premier League match that got started.
Play was abandoned after 90 minutes play with the Academy 66-4 after 22 overs, two of the wickets falling to Ryan Murray.
The other four Premier Division matches at Alton, Burridge, Havant and Lymington were called off after heavy overnight rain saturated grounds.
It was the second consecutive week the entire SPL programme was washed out.
Play began promptly on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground, where South Wilts celebrated an immediate breakthrough when England Under-19 aspirant Felix Organ nicked an inside edge from Murray on to his stumps.
The promising Cole Campbell (18), from Hampton School, made light of the damp bowler friendly conditions and played three handsome boundary shots before being ‘cut in half’ and trapped leg before by Murray (2-33).
When James Hibberd (1-15) pinned Tom Scriven in front, the Academy were in desperate trouble at 20-3.
But South Wilts raised Miles Kantolinna, eager to shine against his Bemerton club-mates, underlined his potential and moved nicely on to 29* before ESCA Bunbury Festival starlet Fletcha Middleton perished.
Like Campbell, Middleton (19) played some nice shots, scoring four boundaries before going for one too many and toe-ending an intended pull into the safe hands of Will Wade at square leg.
It left the Academy 66-4 when the rains came and the match was abandoned.
The ‘no result’ enabled South Wilts to maintain their 15-point lead at the top of the Premier Division over Lymington, whose New Forest derby with New Milton was washed out.
The postponement left Lymington boasting the best overall record of five wins and a draw from seven games – and earned them the Time pennant ‘title’, the club’s first prize in 32 years.
Play did get under way on the Isle of Wight, where only five overs were possible in Ventnor’s Division 1 match with Portsmouth, who were 15-0 when the weather intervened.
Not a ball was bowled in Division 2, but starts were made in the SPL3 matches at Basingstoke & North Hants and Gosport Borough, where were in trouble at 42-4 against visiting Purbrook when play was abandoned.
