Will Kerr, Hartley Wintney’s new captain, took on an unusual triple role of opening batsman, wicketkeeper and bowler in the high scoring Southern Premier League Division 2 duel with Fair Oak on the historic Cricket Green.
He fared pretty well in all facets of the game, scoring 65, taking three wickets and snaring three catches – but in the end had to concede defeat to his opposite number, Rufus Bullough, whose SPL best 89 laid the foundations for a 15-run win.
Captaining the Oaks for the first time, Bullough had only scored five runs in his three previous knocks this season, but he tucked into the Hartley bowling, hitting a six and 15 fours, sharing an important stand with Matt Burrell (33) as Fair Oak headed towards 242 all out.
At drinks, Kerr handed the keeping gauntlets to Hugo Hammond, who promptly caught Bullough off the captain’s bowling !
Kerr went on to bag three catches and take two more wickets to finish with 3-22. This stopped the flow of runs for a while, but Richard Featherstone added a useful 24 not out at the end, as Fair Oak were bowled out for 242, when it looked like they would get over 300.
Action man Kerr then top scored with 65 (10 fours and one six) as Hartley started the run chase. He departed with the score on 118 and handed over to Indy Chakrabati (38) and Jamie Teale (55), who added 75 for the fifth wicket.
Teale was in a very explosive mood as his innings came off 57 balls and saw him hit four maximums as well as three fours. However, Hartley Wintney were still behind the run rate and in the end fell short as they finished on 227-7, Asad Abbas having returned a tidy 2-24.
