St Cross Symondians teenage prospect Alex Ayers clocked up a ton – a matter of hours after passing his driving test, first time naturally …
But he wasn’t behind the wheel of his mother’s car speeding around the narrow leafy lanes of Amport, where the cricketing Ayers family live : instead with bat in hand in an ECB Under-17 county match on the Isle of Wight.
Alex was on the car ferry headed for the island when he received the worrying news that the IWCB had lost four wickets for only nine runs after Berkshire had posted a daunting 446-9.
Ayers took his foot off the brake, pressed the accelerator pedal, revved up – and scorched to 135 (21 fours) leading the island to 257 all out. KES all-rounder Jovan Dhariwal (56) shared a 124-run partnership with him.
It was all in a day’s work for Ayers, who has an equally important mission at Bemerton tomorrow, as St Cross Symondians strive to beat South Wilts (and edge out Burridge) in the three-horse race for the Premier Division title.
