Barbados cricketer Anthony Alleyne announced himself on the Island scene with a significant innings of 65 and two wickets on debut in Ventnor’s 26-run victory over Bashley (Rydal) seconds at Steephill.
The 27-year old, who made 47 appearances for Barbados between 2013 and 2019, predictably top scored in Ventnor’s 196-6 – a total always beyond Bashley once the visitors had fallen to 82-6. They recovered to 170-7 by stumps.
Alleyne, who hit eight fours and a six, added 75 with Mark Fletcher (35) before being caught off the spin bowling of Hampshire Under-15 prospect Ethan Baker.
“He’s a quality player, no doubt about that,” reflected Bashley’s Neil Taylor, whose controlled, accurate spell tied Ventnor down for 8 overs.
“He plays very straight and, as you might expect, hits the ball very hard and once the pitches firm up should score a stack of runs. He looks a decent off-spinner as well.”
Once Alleyne had departed, Chris Russell (32 not out), aided by Ben Woodhouse and Martin Blackman, took Ventnor to their 170.
Ideally, Bashley needed one of their top six to make a fifty. Four batsmen made double-figure starts and it needed a maiden half-century from Sean Mulley (50) and an unbeaten 30 from young Baker to get the New Forest club to 170. Alleyne and Zeph Wells shared four of the wickets after a tight new ball start from Chris Russell. Ventnor batting below Steve Snell (left), Mark Fletcher (centre) and a 'hold the shot' coaching stance by Ben Woodhouse.
