Alton have lined up Auckland University all-rounder and captain Nick Stobart as their overseas player in the ECB Southern Premier League next summer.
The Zimbabwe-born 24-year old, pictured in action earlier this year, enjoyed a fruitful past season in Lancashire, helping Walkden win the Bolton & District League title. In all cricket he made some 550 runs and, in his principal role as a sharp out-swing strike bowler, took 63 wickets, lifting the league’s bowling award in the process.
Stobart steps into the shoes of fellow Kiwi Matt Bacon, who took 42 wickets all all competitions for the Brewers this summer.
Sources in New Zealand suggest Stobart has long been regarded as a player of significant promise. He excelled for Whangarei Boy’s High School, topping the wicket and MVP charts between 2012 and 2015. He represented the Northern Districts Under-19s and finished as their leading wicket-taker during their 2013 Regional campaign, culminating with Northern Knights Development Program inclusion.
Before his move to Auckland, Stobart starred in the Northland Premier Competition and based on seasonal statistics (2013-15), was named in the Northland “Club Team of the Year” during this period. He represented the Northland Men’s XI, following his “Bowler of the Year” award for the 2nd XI in 2015/16.
Stobart not only boasts an impressive playing career, to date, but he’s an accomplished and practising NZC level 1 coach, with a Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science (BSc) degree. He has conducted a Strength and Conditioning program for young cricketers and coached an age-group side through the Auckland Eastern Districts CA tournament. During the first term of the 2018 school year, before he left for the UK, he was employed by Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland as their 1st XI fielding and conditioning coach.
