HOOK and Newnham Basics will face arch rivals Basingstoke & North Hants in the Guy Jewell T20 Cup final at May’s Bounty on Sunday afternoon, August 29 after a five-wicket win over Rotherfield Park.
Basingstoke were already through after accounting for Odiham & Greywell, while in the second semi-final Rotherfield Park were put into bat and were soon in trouble as Hook pair Anik Divecha (2-16) and Shane Brewer (1-10) reduced them to 23-3. However, at this point Scott Myers took up the mantle and along with the emerging Freddie Egleston added 59 for the fourth wicket, writes Graham Merry.
Just when it looked like the game was getting away from Hook, Myers’ excellent innings of 58, which included eight fours and one six, came to an end as he was stumped by Josh Buckingham off a ball from Daniel Moore. This innings helped Rotherfield to 107-6 from their 16 overs as Josh Balcombe (2-5) took two late wickets.
The weather was certainly gloomy when Hook started their reply, but Buckingham (24) and Ben Thane (38) lightened things up with some big hitting. Jay Patel came in for some punishment from Buckingham as he sent a straight six into Castle Field and then sent the next ball over the wall towards Fairfields School.
He was then caught just into the boundary as he went for another maximum in the same over, but after 18 balls Hook were already 38-1. Thane then took over hitting four sixes with two coming in the fourth over bowled by Myers and two more in the seventh over from Egleton.
When Thane departed Hook looked in control at 73-3, but some solid bowling from Tom Paul (2-15) saw the scoreboard slow down and it looked like it would be a tense ending. But Hook were not to be denied as a flurry of fours from Harry Warner (17) and Jack Murrell (14) saw them home with four overs to spare.
