Fifteen-year old leggie Ethan Baker celebrated his selection for next week’s prestigious ECB Bunbury Festival at Loughborough University by spinning Lymington to a 34-run defeat and keeping Bashley (Rydal) in the hunt for possible ECB Southern Premier League honours in the process.
Baker, one of six promising Hampshire teenagers chosen to represent the south and west at the tournament, took 6-41 as Lymington were bowled out for 169 – a target Bashley successfully navigated with 13 balls to spare, stand-in skipper Josh Digby opening and scoring an unbeaten 69.
Lymington’s defeat was scant reward for Ryan Scott, who glued their innings together with a fine 84, his highest Premier League score since he made an unbeaten 101 against New Milton in June 2018.
Scott was at the crease in the third over after Brad Currie (2-18) had bowled Ben Rogers for a duck and was eventually last man out, caught behind when the left-armer returned for his second spell.
Scott struck two sixes and nine fours, earlier sharing an 84-run stand with Ximus De Plooy (33), which ended in a run out.
Four wickets fell for two runs at that stage before Scott added useful runs with Josh Proctor (12) and James Wade (11) – all the time Baker making inroads before the top scorer eventually ran out of partners.
With main strike bowler Matt Metcalfe (and Terry Crabb) successfully aiding Lymington second team’s Hampshire League Division 1 survival bid with a win at Easton & Martyr Worthy, the host home seam attack was relatively toothless.
Bashley made a comfortable start and had reached 67 before Jacob Gordon (34) was trapped leg before by Du Plooy (3-29).
Bashley wobbled, losing four wickets for 24 runs, their top order being weakened by skipper Michael Porter’s absence due to covid isolation.
But Digby took on the responsibility, adding a fruitful 47 with Ben Francis (21) before a positive knock from Sam Stroud (23 not out) saw Bashley home – the stand-in captain anchoring himself to the crease for a three-hour stint which won the game.
* Baker's 6-41 return has won the Bashley spin teen this week's 'Cricketer of the Round' award, backed by the www.vimpsatthecrease.com cricket website.
