Former Hampshire Academy left-arm pace bowler Tom Barber has joined the prestigious MCC Young Cricketers under contract and took five wickets in his debut match.
He returned figures of 3-59 and then a second innings 2-90 (off 22 overs) before the YC’s three-day match against Warwickshire II was abandoned through rain.
Barber has spent the past winter training with Middlesex at Lord’s and will play some cricket for their Second XI during the coming season.
“Tom’s progressing well and has trained with us all winter,” explained Middlesex Head Coach Richard Scott.
“Has worked closely with Richard Johnson, our bowling coach, and modified his action to enable him to consistently swing the ball.
“Currently we are keen to see the result of the winter work outside in the form of games and grass nets. We think, with consistency, he has something.
Barber, who spent the 2014 and 2015 season at the Ageas Bowl Academy, is expected to play locally for Bashley (Rydal) in the ECB Southern Premier League.
He played West of England Premier League cricket for Clevedon last summer, but disappointed with only 12 wickets.
