Bashley (Rydal) clinched runners-up spot in the ECB British Gas Southern Premier Division – and made off with the 50-over pennant - after a comprehensive eight-wicket win over the Hampshire Academy.
It was the third time the Bash had finished second – Michael Porter’s developing side ending up 12 points behind champions Havant, but with the best record in ‘white ball’ 50-over cricket, seven wins in nine outings.
“Its been a strange year. As a club we have 22-plus players who wouldn’t look out of place in the first team; however, a constantly changing team week to week has meant our performances, on occasions, have also been inconsistent and this is an area we seriously need to improve.
“But I’m extremely happy with us finishing second, one place higher than last year, when we also had the best record in Time cricket. Winning the 50-over pennant was also a highlight as the club has never achieved this before," Porter said.
Evergreen Kevin Nash (4-26), pictured, broke the back of the Academy batting, reducing the Hampshire youngsters to 50-5 on a BCG track probably worth 250.
Porter lavished praise on Kevin Nash. “Kev’s is a living legend at the Bash club and for me he has shown why he is one of the all time leading Premier League wicket takers," he continued.
“He knows he’s not going to be able to beat the bat for pace, so is happy just bowing the same ball over and over again, which he still gets a handful of wickets. Rest assured, we haven’t seen the last of Nashy just yet!”
Cole Campbell (20) battled hard after which it was left to the emerging Scott Currie (26) to give the Academy’s eventual 133 an air of respectability.
Bashley chased the target down inside 28 overs – Josh Digby hitting an unbeaten 70 (one six and seven fours) after a 91-run start with Sam Thomson (36). Digby finished the season with a creditable 463 runs, including four fifty-plus scores, two of which came in the last two games against the Academy and previously Andover.
