George Wilson hoisted a six into the village garden car park off the fourth ball of the last over to climax a terrific 267-run chase and give Bashley (Rydal) a thrilling five-wicket win over Havant.
With South Wilts unexpectedly slipping up at Bournemouth, it was a result of real significance at the top of the ECB Southern Premier Division.
Bashley head into the final five matches of 50-over ‘white ball’ cricket with what amounts to a 39-point lead at the top.
They have already won the Time pennant for a second time in four seasons and are now firm favourites to lift the Premier crown for the first time.
Havant, on the flip side of the coin, have gone five matches without a win and lie third from bottom of the log, an unprecedented situation for a club that won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.
They won’t lose too many matches having posted 261-8, but they will be disappointed not to have totalled more having been 145 without loss around lunchtime.
They totally dominated the morning session, with Harry Gadd hitting a six and 15 fours in a Premier Division best 96 and sharing a season’s best start with Stuart Ransley (62).
A dramatic post-lunch swing saw left-armer Brad Currie (4-55) remove both openers and then nip out Pete Hopson.
Now it was Bashley in control – Havant losing three top order wickets for 21 runs as George Pardoe (2-38) bowled an equally impressive spell.
Stand-in skipper Richard Hindley (32 not out) and Siviwe Gidana (23) added handy runs, but closing at 261-8 was below par bearing in mind the start Havant had made.
Nonetheless, it was a demanding ask for Bashley, who thrived on three successive partnerships as they homed in on their target.
Openers Tom Jacques (58) and Alex Turner (25) made a 96-run start, which Ben Walker (38) and Michael Porter (left) built upon with another fifty.
Porter (68) and Tom Friend (38) hastened the scoring rate – both perishing to catches in the deep off
young left-arm spinner Freddie Gadd (3-54). Porter went for an accomplished 68 at 228-4, Friend hitting three sixes before picking out the safe hands of Chris Morgan. 254-5.
Bashley were almost home, but teen pair Pardoe and Wilson still had a bit of work to do. Wilson didn’t hang about …
With a 39-point lead intact and five ‘white ball’ matches left, the title is surely Bashley’s to lose … ?
