It’s double tops for Bashley (Rydal), whose first and second teams lead the way in their respective British Gas Southern League tables.
While Bashley seniors were leapfrogging South Wilts to climb to the Premier Division summit, the club’s second side held on to top spot in Division 3, defending 184 to beat Fawley by 15 runs.
The second team’s victory at Holbury was a personal success for the Van Wyk brothers, who joined Bashley after enjoying success at Winton and in Last Man Stands cricket.
Jay Van Wyk (49), pictured left by Terry Nash, top scored in Bashley’s 184 (Phil Morris 29), while brother Pierre weighed in with a 3-42 bowling return after making a handy 29 relatively late in the innings.
Ernst Knacke (55) hit a patient half-century at the top of the Fawley order, but the oilmen continues to lose wickets all too frequently, with Pierre Van Wyk taking three key scalps.
Elliott Earl (29) and Adam Freeman (24) kept the Fawley flame flickering, but Jake Lilley (4-42) struck several blows to snuff the challenge at 169 all out.
A 174-run opening partnership between Chris Froud (82 not out) and Max Harsham (82) took Basingstoke & North Hants II to within touching distance of an eventual nine-wicket victory over Havant II at May’s Bounty. Andrew Galliers (94) just missed out on a century in Havant’s 203 all out.
