He's not been on the podium at the Rio Olympics, but Bashley (Rydal) left-arm pace bowler Brad Currie proudly shows off the medal he won today for helping Surrey YCs win the three-day ECB Under-17 County Championship – and he's aiming to pick up a second medal in Sunday's 50-over final.
The 17-year old former Poole Grammar School student, who won a sports scholarship to Millfield last year, took 1-16 in 12 overs against Lancashire at Arundel, bowled in three tidy spells.
Currie explained: “I got my wicket early on when one of the Lancashire openers shouldered arms and was trapped leg before wicket.
“It was the perfect start after we had posted 415 on day one.
“Ideally, I would have liked to have added another wicket, but was generally pleased with the way I bowled and naturally delighted we won the final after bowling Lancs out for 246.”
Currie, who is studying French, accounting and economics at Millfield, shone through the various Dorset junior age groups and is currently in their Minor Counties Championship squad.
“It’s been a pretty busy time this summer, my first season at Millfield, where I’ve learned a lot under Richard Ellison and Mark Garaway,” he continued.
“I’ve played a lot of cricket, done a lot of bowling and really pleased to have joined Bashley, who have been hugely welcoming.”
Currie goes for more silverware – and an ECB double – in Sunday's 50-over county final against Durham in Kibworth.
“It means I can’t play for Bashley (v Ventnor) as I'll be on the road to Leicestershire soon after lunch," he added.
It’s a big week all round for Currie – and three other aspiring Hampshire academy players.
Felix Organ, Tom Scriven and Chris Searle have all been selected to play for the South & West in next week’s ECB Super 4’s tournament at Loughborough.
“It’s the national Under-17 regional tournament against sides from London, the Midlands and the North – a great opportunity for me to show my paces in front of the England selectors.”
