Hampshire prospect Fraser Hay blazed 64 runs off 33 balls, 24 of which came off one David Griffiths over, as Portsmouth put a dent into Basingstoke & North Hants promotion prospects on Southsea seafront.
The 20-year old Western Australian, who is on a scholarship contract at the Ageas Bowl, hit four sixes and five fours in his whistle-stop knock which knocked the stuffing out of Basingstoke.
Portsmouth were already purring on the back of a maiden 104 from James Christian and Jack Marston (80) when Hay arrived at the St Helen’s crease with ten overs left.
He clouted the previously economical former Hampshire and Kent pace bowler Griffiths for three sixes and a boundary in one over as Portsmouth’s total soared to 304-6.
Portsmouth’s eventual 138-run victory overshadowed a fine solo show by Basingstoke’s Mitchell Stokes, who made 65 himself after taking 4-51 with the ball.
Basingstoke were bowled out for 166, with Hay completing a fine day with a 3-31 return, which included openers Dan Belcher and George Metzger.
