Can Matt Metcalfe bowl Lymington to an improbable ECB Southern Premier League championship ?
The talismanic 33-year old all-rounder, who has played in every one of the SPL's 20 summers, took the 27th five-wicket haul of his career as he bowled Lymington to the double over Bournemouth. He now has 534 league wickets under his belt.
Backed by the pacey Josh Proctor (3-43), he took 5-37 as Bournemouth were rolled out for a modest 135 - a target Lymington polished off with Ryan Scott (69) scoring his first half-century since late June last year.
The six-wicket victory strengthened Lymington's hold on second place in the Premier Division ahead of what could be season defining visit to South Wilts on Saturday. They are 11 points behind leaders Bashley (Rydal).
While Metcalfe will take most of the accolades, it was Proctor's two spells that were particularly significant, the soon-to-depart Chichester University student removing Bournemouth's top scorers Simon Woodruff (39) and Ed Denham (31), who were repairing the damage from 37-4.
With Metcalfe weighing in with another ‘five-for’, Bournemouth tucked uneasily into their lunch nine down and were soon in the field defending 135.
Dan Conway (2-11) soon removed both Lymington openers, but Scott (fresh from some much needed middle time playing for Dorset in midweek) chose the day to rekindle some form, making 69 (12 fours) and sharing a handy third-wicket stand with Dom Hand (24), which took the game away from Bournemouth.
Gareth Schreuder and Dan Cox completed the formalities.
