Promising King Edward VI all-rounder Jovan Dhariwal marked his full Old Tauntonians & Romsey debut with a half-century, but was unable to halt Bournemouth’s charge at the top of Southern Premier League Division One.
The 17-year old hit 52 before OTs conceded a 66-run defeat to Bournemouth, whose ninth win in 11 matches has established a 17-point lead over Sarisbury Athletic at the top.
Bournemouth’s Luke Webb dominated the match, hitting an undefeated 133, an innings which contained nine fours and six maximums.
Webb shared century partnerships with opener Tom West (52) and Chris Park (52) as Bournemouth powered to 257-3.
“Webby again was fantastic and very destructive,” praised third-wicket partner and Bournemouth skipper Chris Park.
“As soon as he was in on 70 or 80 with 10 overs left – some of the sixes he hit were unbelievable and he is enjoying batting at Bournemouth at the moment.
“He plays in third gear and, when he wants to go to fifth gear, he can. Clearing the boundary by 25 yards is quite a huge hit at Bournemouth.
“Our job during the final 10 overs was just to give him the strike. He deserved that role having worked hard for two hours knocking the bowlers around and finding the pace of the pitch.
“Having secured his first class university degree at Oxford Brookes, he is concentrating on cricket now and enjoying playing with a little bit of freedom.”
OTs used five slow bowlers as they tried in vain to curb Webb’s run onslaught – Bournemouth’s spinners fared better, taking a lion’s share of the spoils after tea.
OTs dropped to 65-3 before Dhariwal (52), left above, enjoyed partnerships with Rob Newman (24) and Stuart Tognarelli (39).
But having threatened at 163-4, OTs promptly lost five wickets for six runs and were facing the inevitable at 169-9, leg spinner Jem Warner (3-35) having dismantled the middle-order.
Keith Trodd (21) produced a late rally before OTs closed at 191 all out.
