The fast start Zimbabwean opener Bothwell Chapungu provided was key to Totton & Eling’s eventually comfortable 98-run over promoted Alton at the Jubilee Ground.
Chapunga (39) was aggressive and hit the ball sweetly, with a six and seven fours to set Totton off in positive fashion.
Toton lost Joe Baker, but Chapunga was joined by Harry Stephens (45), and the pair continued to play positively, scoring at over five an over against the hard white ball.
Chapunga perished to a fine piece of fielding by Freddie Egleston, but South African Josh Elliot (43) scored freely as Totton advanced towards the 150-mark, leaving Alton contemplating a large total to chase.
Off-spinner Dan Sumner (2-59) removed both batsmen to get Alton back into the game and when former Totton man Tom Varney (2-52) and Walters (2-38) took a wicket apiece the visitors slipped to 173-6.
Totton’s lower order continued to chip away though, and Solent University pair Billy Blyghton (21) and Josh Taylor (37) had nearly added another 50 before both were removed by left-arm spinner Tom South (3-37). Totton were 243 all out.
Alton’s batting failed to fire. They lost wickets all the way down the line, batsmen making starts but not going on to make anything significant.
Sam Ruffell (22) and Mark Heffernan (17) all came and went, while skipper Scott Myers, who finished unbeaten with 55, looked on forlorn at the other end. Alton lost three wickets at 109, with spin pair Brighton Mugochi (3-33) and Joe Bracey (3-38) benefitting from Alton’s profligacy. They were 145 all out.
