Alton’s visit to Winchester’s Green Jackets Ground on Saturday (12.30) could be hugely significant in the outcome of the Southern League West Premier/1 West group leadership race.
Hosts St Cross Symondians (under the banner of the club’s second team) have won all three matches so far and are averaging a healthy 21 points per match, but Alton (ave 17.60) will make the 20-mile trip down the A31 in confident mood after winning their last four games.
Their only blip came against the Hampshire Academy (17.75), who lie second in the log ahead of their visit to Burridge.
Alton were 12-2 against Sarisbury Athletic when Tom South (33) and Scott Myers (35) came together, but after the artful Rob Franklin (3-16) had dismissed the pair, the Brewers were indebted to teenager Jude Wright (31) for shepherding the remaining batsmen through to 137 as Sarisbury unleashed a three-pronged spin attack.
Sarisbury were light of several of their normal top order, but Ricky Rawlins (32) and Sam Hill guided them to 49-0 before the Brewers turned to spin themselves and Jack Myers (4-27) and Tom Paul (2-27) began to create inroads. Sarisbury lost three wickets at 86 (Franklin 20) and were dismissed for 116, South (3-26) taking two of the last three wickets.
