Calmore Sports have bolstered their already potent spin attack by signing Australian youngster Liam O’Connor from the Victoria Premier League club Casey South Melbourne for the upcoming Southern Premier League Division 1 campaign.
O’Connor made his first grade bow in the club’s last two matches of the winter season, having been picked for Victoria’s emerging country side for last December’s national youth championships in Adelaide.
His arrival extends Calmore’s links with South Melbourne, whose first team captain Michael Wallace previously played at SO40 and Mark Lavelle for Casey.
With Loperwood Park (like virtually every other ground) waterlogged, O’Connor may have to be patient before he makes his Calmore debut – the club’s opening Village Cup tie against SPL1 rivals Sarisbury Athletic next Sunday having already been reversed to Allotment Road.
Opening batsman Ben Johns will skipper Calmore Sports this season, without James Manning (retired) and all-rounder Shaun Johnson, who has returned to play for Bexhill in the Sussex League.
