Calmore Sports are all but mathematically out of the running for a third successive Southern Premier League Division 1 title.
Portsmouth’s 113-run win on Southsea seafront meant a fourth defeat for Calmore, who are a massive 50 points behind leaders Bournemouth.
A half-century by Australian Fraser Hay (54) gave Portsmouth the ideal launch pad, but at 129-5 it was James Christian (65), who ensured the city side would reach 250-9.
Calmore sank to 71-5 (Ben Johns 25), eventually scoring 137 (Paul Proudley 33), with left-arm spinner Andrew Marston (4-34) and Hay (3-15) doing the damage.
Hartley Wintney gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a shot in the arm with a surprise two-wicket win over fifth-placed Hook & Newnham Basics, who were always struggling after being put into bat on a surface freshened by heavy overnight rain.
Scott Baldwin (left) was Hartley’s hero, taking 5-21 before hitting a key 37 in the second innings run chase.
But the dressing room euphoria of only a second win of the summer was dulled when news leaked through of Ventnor’s unexpected win over promotion chasing Sarisbury Athletic, which left Hartley fastened to the SPL1 basement.
Jordan Hobday (57) eased Hook to 82-1, but from 113-2 Basics collapsed to 1769 all out, Baldwin and Dan Reynaldo doing the damage.
Jonny Kerr (36) and Baldwin (37) took Hartley’s reply to 99-2, but a clatter of wickets fell before Matt Kerr (30 not out) got the host club across the line.
