Calmore Sports left-hander Ben Johns had to forego the chance of a second consecutive century on Australian soil as his adopted Melbourne club, Brighton chased an outright victory against Victoria Sub-District South West 1 cellar dwellers Taylors Lakes.
Hitting eight boundaries in an unbeaten 90, Johns was pulled up ten runs short of his hundred when Brighton, having made 207-3, declared to chase vital second innings bowling bonus points in their quest to make the elimination play-offs.
Johns, 23, had made his Aussie-best 105 in Brighton’s previous match against leaders Caulfield.
Taylors Lakes, having been bowled out for 145 first time around, were 134-5 at stumps – Johns, given a rare bowling, taking a wicket – that of Lachlan Marr, who top scored in both innings !
‘All rounder’ Johns is understood to be keen to talk to his Calmore team-mates about his prize wicket when the Southern Premier League programme begins against Hook & Newnham Basics at Loperwood Park on May 4.
South Wilts new boy Raff Hussey got a long overdue opportunity to spend some time at the crease playing Second Grade for Port Adelaide, but his 90-minute knock, which yielded 20, wasn’t quite enough to get his side over the line against West End Grade rivals Prospect, who emerged 15-run winners from a low scoring affair.
Frequently batting nine, 18-year old Hussey, who is coming to the end of his winter at the Darren Lehmann Academy, has had precious few chances to show his batting prowess – but his 11 wicket haul, which includes a 3-38 return against Prospect, won’t have gone unnoticed at Bemerton.
Portsmouth’s Ben Duggan has scored some much needed runs playing Western Australia Third Grade Turf cricket for Murdoch University Melville 2nd XI in Perth, scoring 108 and 63 in his last two knocks.
