Teenage left-arm medium-pace bowler Jack Campbell produced two decisive four-wicket new-ball spells for Hampshire’s junior age group sides.
He ripped out Andover’s middle-order with a 4-25 return which set up a first ECB British Gas Southern Premier League victory for the Hampshire Academy.
Twenty-four hours later, the lanky East Hampshire left-armer wrecked Worcestershire’s top order with a 4-15 spell which pointed Hampshire’s youngsters to a 109-run win in the county’s opening ECB Under-17 Cup match at May’s Bounty.
Campbell, who cut his teeth in Steep’s junior set up before moving to play for Liphook & Ripsley, is making encouraging progress in Hampshire’s EPP set up.
“Jack is developing through hard work during the winter. He has made himself available for everything, training, nets, first and second team and is now understanding what is required and expected at a higher level,” praised his mentor, former Hampshire pace bowler James Tomlinson, who took over 400 career wickets for the county.
Exploiting the damp conditions, Campbell got his teeth into Andover after Tom Scriven (3-16) had ripped out left-hander Storm Green, Babu Veetil and Glyn Treagus had left the top order in ruins at 4-3.
He had Matt Knight (0), Sherwin Govender (11) and Harry Blackburn (8) all caught before trapping Lions skipper Matt Hooper (0) leg before.
Campbell’s 4-25 return left Andover reeling at 34-7 – a precarious situation Dave Watson (29) marginally improved before last year’s Premier 1 champions were dismissed for 73.
Miles Kantolinna (36) and Ben Duggan (30) wasted no time in blasting the Academy to a ten-wicket victory – the pair scoring 51 of the 74 runs they required in boundaries in 14 overs.
Campbell’s 4-15 seven-over spell (three of which were maidens) set up the U17s ECB Cup win over Worcestershire, who were dismissed for 103 (Patrick Holly 3-36).
Hampshire posted 212-6, with Fletcha Middleton hitting 77 and Canford talent Tom Prest an unbeaten 49.
