Cape Town all-rounder Hilio De Abreu produced a stunning performance to help guide Burridge to a ‘winning draw’ in a high scoring ECB Southern Premier Division affair against the Hampshire Academy at Newclose.
De Abreu took 5-61 with his off-spin and then rescued Burridge from a precarious 23-3 with a season’s best 82 which was to prove a springboard from which the visitors were able to glean a greater share of the points.
Chasing the Academy’s 264, Burridge finished 11 runs shy of an outright victory at 254-8 off 57 overs, but enjoyed a superior overall run rate.
De Abreu’s performance with bat and ball took a slight edge off 16-year old Tom Prest’s maiden Southern Premier League century for the Academy.
The 16-year old Canford prodigy underpinned the Academy score with his hundred which contained nine fours and countless two’s.
“It was a terrific surface to bat on, but the boundary was large, so we had plenty of running between the wickets to do,” he smiled.
Back in the action
Prest, who went on to make another century for Hampshire Under-17s against Devon the following day and then made 99 off the MCC attack in midweek, shared fifty-plus stands with Brad Taylor (25), Fletcha Middleton (32) and George Metzger (28) before Channel Islands prospect Joshua Lawrenson made a handy 25.
All the time, De Abreu was chipping away – his 5-61 return being his best SPL figures.
It wasn’t long before the Cape Crusader was back in the action - with the bat as Joe Collings-Wells and Richard Lock went for ducks and Burridge were in trouble at 23-3.
De Abreu papered over the cracks in a century fourth-wicket stand with former Hampshire batsman Derek Kenway (50), but when the Cape Town all-rounder departed for 82 (at 170-7), the Academy sniffed a chance of victory.
Enter Oli Southon (48) and Sully White (38 not out), who ramped up the scoring rate with a quick-fire 82-run stand which took Burridge on to 254-8 and that winning draw.
