Shouldering the responsibility of captaincy clearly impacted on young left-hander Ben Johns, who made a season’s best 82 as Calmore Sports checked New Milton’s revival with a 73-run win at Fernhill.
Opening the batting Johns, who struck a six and ten fours, underpinned Calmore’s 195-7 (Ben Perry 30) before becoming a third victim for Campbell Golding (3-32).
New Milton, who had won their previous four matches and edged out of the immediate danger zone in the process, never really got going and lacked any meaningful partnerships en route to 132 all out (Ryan Beck 37), Mark Lavelle (4-27) and Liam Carty (3-34) doing the damage for Calmore.
Portsmouth weren’t in the best state of health at 114-6 against Sarisbury Athletic on Southsea seafront, but Alex Hammond (41) and James Christian (31) ensured they posted a competitive 174-9.
Fraser Hay’s new ball spell of 4-38 ended any prospects of a Sarisbury win and only Tom Nightingale (36) and Jordan Wright (24) came to the party in their 123 all out.
