ark Mbofana hit a chanceless century as table topping Totton & Eling beat Old Tauntonians & Romsey by 13 runs to secure a 20-point lead at the British Gas Southern League Division 2 summit.
The Zimbabwean, who hit 18 boundaries, made his hundred after three of Totton’s top line batsmen Sam Bracey, James Taylor and Oli Perrin had gone for ducks.
Totton’s 213-7 was only just enough as OTs came back hard with skipper Rob Newman hitting an unbeaten 97.
Two wickets with the new ball by Danny Mogg (2-39) and a further brace by teenage spinner Joe Vaughan (2-20), who bagged Taylor and Perrin, left Totton an uncertain 82-4.
Aided by Kumodak Sharma (37), Mbofana doubled the Totton score, but the visitors weren’t altogether comfortable at 175-5.
A perfect time then for Ethan Taylor to smack 33 not out and share an unbroken 38-run stand with Southern Vipers starlet Katie George – a pre-tea spree which saw Totton’s total climb to 213-7.
Taylor wasn’t finished. His two wickets of left-arm spin left OTs in a hole at 39-4 during the first hour after tea.
Like Mbofana before him, the OTs captain took up the challenge and got the Romsey hosts right back in the game with a century partnership.
Newman, pictured below, went on to make an unbeaten 97, but despite another 47-run flurry with Keith Trodd was unable to push Old Tauntonians & Romsey closer than 200-7.
