SCOTT Myers played another captain’s innings as Alton strengthened their position in the high-grade SPL Premier Division with a convincing win over bottom side Andover at Jubilee.
With the sun blazing down, Myers had no hesitation in batting first, but things did not start well for Alton who had lost heavily to St Cross Symondians the week before.
Alex Hammond was soon caught behind off Babu Veettil and Abeed Janmohamed (pictured above by the Alton Herald), after reaching 26 in good style, fell to the off-spin of Matt Hooper, caught off the glove.
A middle-order wobble followed against Hooper and Sri Lankan Chamika Karunaratne and the home side were a shaky 56-4 when Mark Heffernan joined Scott Myers.
The pair dug in to see Alton through to lunch and went on to add 83 valuable runs before Heffernan (34 off 72 balls) was caught behind off Veettil, again off the glove. Alton 139-5.
Myers, again showing immense concentration, continued to accumulate, easing to his half-century and finding solid support in Andy Postles and brother Jack Myers as Alton went past 200.
The dangerous Sean Jamison came in at 208-7 and some late hitting by both batsmen took Alton to 248-7. Myers reached his century in the 64th and last over, ending 102 not out off 145 balls, while Jamison struck 23 off 14 balls.
Alton came out of the blocks fast and Andover, after their long, draining day in the field were blown away by Ben Mortimer and the South African, Jamison. In the session before tea, the new-ball duo reduced the visitors to a parlous 27-5.
On the restart, Andover moved to 43 before Jamison took his fourth wicket to finish with 4-33 in 10 overs. Mortimer picked up 2-27 in nine, and Alton were in control.
Matt Knight and Max Romar-Lee counter-attacked against the spin of Julian Ballinger and Jack Myers and the run-rate improved.
But Alton probed for that one error that would put them back in control and eventually Romar-Lee, having struck an entertaining 42 off 32 balls, played one aggressive shot too many and Jack Myers took the catch safely at deep square.
Two runs later, Knight (33) was also caught off Ballinger and Andover were 117-8. Jack Myers wrapped up the victory with two quick wickets, Andover being all out for 123 in just 28 overs.
