Hampshire all-rounder Chris Wood inspired Old Tauntonians & Romsey’s 43-run win over Sarisbury Athletic – a result which lifted the Romsey club out of the Southern Premier League Division One drop zone and planted Calmore Sports in it.
Wood [pictured] came to the crease after Joe Vaughan had been bowled by the first ball of the match by Jason Allmark (3-41) and hit 86. He later took 2-21 bowling his left-arm.
The 28-year old county cricketer got a duck in his first OTs game of the season against Calmore, but made up for it at Allotment Road, where he hit two sixes and 14 fours, taking Romsey to 114-3 before perishing to the left-arm spin of Sam Hill (2-54).
With Phil Jewell (2-18 of ten overs) keeping it tight and spinner Cameron Pye (3-11) making subsequent inroads, OTs needed a steady 35 not out from Charlie King to guide them to 179 all out.
Sarisbury lurched to 27-4 - Wood nailed Ricky Rawlins early on and then got Josh Hill – before Tom Mills (39) steadied the ship.
Seventh-wicket pair Jordan Wright (28) and Sam Hill (23) added 50, but Harry Tulk (3-14) cut through the tail as Sarisbury lost their last four wickets for 11 runs.
Sparsholt produced their ‘get out of jail’ card at Church Road, where rain robbed Rowledge of an almost certain victory.
Bundled out for a meagre 78, they stared defeat the face when Rowledge eased to 46 not out when play was abandoned.
Sparsholt experienced all sorts of problems against the experienced Simon Bonser (3-14), who extracted considerable life out of the track before Steve Martin (4-22) took over with his spin. Jonty Sebborn’s 26 not out had Rowledge on course, until it rained after 14 overs.
