For the first time in their history Arreton won the Isle of Wight’s Fred Winter Cup beating Cowes by 6 wickets at Shanklin’s Westhill ground.
A Man of the Match performance by Kevin Cooper, pictured, who added 129 not out to his three wickets, saw Arreton home with 8 overs to spare. His 100 came of just 46 balls with his 129 coming off 58 balls including 10 6’s and 13 4’s.
Invited to bat Cowes got to 88-1 at drinks (20 overs) with a partnership of 76 for the second wicket between Jack Summers (60) and Adam Lungley (32) before Lungley was caught at mid-wicket by Arren Warner off Kevin Cooper, who finished with figures of 3 for 41.
Cowes increased the run rate although this was initially restricted by tight bowling from Gary Cooper (1-33) and Chris Wray (2-25), the latter taking two wickets in his third over. At the fall of the sixth wicket Josh Rice (45) was joined by his father Scott Rice (34) and together added 86 in 9 overs helping Cowes to get to 214-8 off their 40 overs.
Arreton openers Flynn Powell (27) and Gary Cooper (13) made 50 for the first wicket before they fell in successive overs with Sam Jones (1) then bowled by Justin Pinder, who opened unchanged and finished with figures of 2-19 off his 8 overs.
At 57 for 3 after 16 overs Arreton were struggling when big hitting Kevin Cooper (129*) was joined by Niall Powell (20), who added 120 for the 4th wicket in just 12 overs before Powell was eventually run out following a smart piece of work from wicketkeeper Jack Summers throwing the ball to the non-striker’s end. Powell was replaced by club captain Rob Wilcox (4*) to see Arreton home with 8 overs to spare.
Cooper said “it was a great team performance to restrict Cowes to 214 and today the batting just clicked, the track was a little slow and on occasions kept low so I decided to play as straight as possible. Having played for Arreton for 14 years and been runners up in the Fred Winter Cup before it a great to finally win it”.
